The Gospel Coalition ‘Repenting of Sin’ Front Loading Gospel False Teaching

My responses in blue.

On the ‘what is the gospel’ page, in the third paragraph, we come to:

‘it is received by faith as we repent of our sins and turn to Jesus. We confess him as Lord and bow to him joyfully.

Repentance when it comes to salvation means to change our mind about what we are trusting in and put our faith and trust in Christ, who is the only one who can save us from the penalty of sin. Our works cannot save because none are righteous. Trust on the perfect lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29)

We do not need to confess Jesus as Lord This is mentioned in the corrupted New International Version in Romans 10:9. Jesus is already Lord; we do not need to confess this, and if this comes before salvation, it is an added work and an accursed gospel (Galatians 1:8-9)

Sorry but, repent of sin and repent of our sins is not mentioned once in the Holy Bible. I’ve cut and pasted the results from ‘repent of sin’, but those words are separated in the scriptures.

Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness; – 1 Kings 8:47

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins – Mark 1:4

Do you see how false teachers twist scripture to make it believe how they want it to sound. John the Baptist was preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. This means to change our mind about trusting in our ‘good’ works that cannot forgive sin and trust on Christ, who can forgive sin. This is a simple message and yet has been so corrupted by man’s interpretation of scripture.

When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance – Mark 2:17

Jesus is saying that he came to save sinners, and he wanted sinners to change their mind (repent) and trust in Him. A self-righteous man who trusts in his ro her works has no need for a saviour. Therefore, when Jesus spoke to those who kept the law, the Pharisees, His message was offensive to them. They had no need for a saviour because they trusted in their works.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; – Luke 3:3

Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth – Luke 15:10

This is always a lovely message to pray to God, that there be joy in Heaven over one sinner who changes his or her mind about trusting in anything other than Jesus Christ, and now trusts in Christ for the remission of sins.

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem – Luke 24:47

This message of repentance for the remission of sins is obviously of clear importance in the gospels, and it was directed to the Jews that they should change their mind about trusting in works and trust in Christ for the forgiveness from the penalty of sin, which is separation from God for eternity in hell.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost – Acts 2:38

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord – Acts 3:19

When you believe on Jesus Christ this is repentance, and when we change our mind from trusting in works to trusting on the only one who can save us, Jesus Christ, our sins are blotted out. When God sees us, He sees the righteousness of Christ on our account.

Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins – Acts 5:31

The message of repentance for the remission of sins was primarily for the Jews. Had the Jews accepted Christ as their saviour, the Kingdom of God would have been set up on the earth, but the jews rejected and killed their messiah.

And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed – 2 Corinthians 12:21

If they have not trusted on Christ then they do not have the second birth of the Holy Spirit, so therefore there is still uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness that God sees in the flesh. We need to be born again into God’s Kingdom by trusting in Christ for the remission of sins, and then we are born into God’s kingdom by the gift of the Holy Spirit. When a person sins, which we all do in thought, word and deed daily, even after being born into the Kingdom of God, the penalty of sin has been paid by Christ and we are made righteous by Him, but we should be walking in the spirit, and not the flesh.

For the gifts and calling of God are without repentanceRomans 11:29

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself2 Timothy 2:13

Ephesians 2:10 says that we were created in Christ Jesus unto good works, but whether we remain carnal or grow in the spirit, we cannot lose our salvation, so don’t be scared by others who tell you this. It is doubtful that they trust Jesus as saviour and Him alone, which is why they need to keep adding works, because they believe it sounds holy, but this twists the gospel into taking away the glory of Christ, and man starts to look at his works and if he or she is doing enough to merit heaven, on top of what Christ did. No no. Salvation comes first, and then you can choose to be a disciple of God.

The false doctrine from The Gospel Coalition continues:

And we announce this good news to people everywhere, entreating them with the words, “Be reconciled to God!” by repenting of sin, asking God for his mercy, and trusting Jesus Christ.

Sorry, we didn’t find any results for your search. Please try the following:

  • Double-check spelling, especially people and place names.
  • Make sure there are spaces between words. Bible Gateway treats “nameoftheFather” and “name of the Father” differently.
  • Use fewer words in your search, especially if you’re unsure of the exact phrase. For example, “baptizing name Father” and “baptizing them in the name of the Father” will both return Matthew 28:19; however, the latter leaves a greater chance for spelling and syntax errors.

Sorry, but belief and trust in Christ must come before any works. We do not have the gift of the Holy Spirit until we put our complete faith in Jesus Christ alone, so when they say “be reconciled to God by repenting of sin (which is not even in the Holy Bible), it is an accursed gospel as it adds work to the simple act of faith that God asks of us. Eternal life is a gift of God, given through grace and not of works.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in themEphesians 2:8-10

Sadly, the Gospel Coalition has the gospel backwards and therefore by adding works they are teaching false doctrine to others. Their gospel message has bad fruit that cannot bring forth good fruit.
